ADHD ASSESSMENT
Thank you for seeking an Adult ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) assessment. We understand that the process of understanding ADHD can be empowering, yet sometimes overwhelming. At Auckland Psychiatrist, our goal is to provide a comprehensive, supportive, and personalised assessment to help you better understand whether ADHD is influencing your life.
Assessing ADHD in adults who were not diagnosed in childhood requires a thorough evaluation. A high-quality ADHD assessment involves a detailed clinical interview, a review of your symptoms, an assessment of the impact on your daily life, and corroborative information from additional sources.
We utilise validated tools, including structured interviews, ADHD rating scales, and QbCheck, a Continuous Performance Test (CPT).
QbCheck is an EMA and TGA registered, CE marked and FDA cleared medical device supporting the assessment and treatment of ADHD.
QbCheck objectively measures the core symptoms of ADHD: inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. This helps us assess your sustained attention and impulse control, while also measuring motor activity (e.g., fidgetiness).
By employing an evidence-based, objective process, we aim to accurately diagnose ADHD, rule it out if not present, and provide follow-up evaluations if medication or other treatments are recommended. For some, the evidence for ADHD may be clear by the end of the evaluation, while for others, further investigation or a different diagnosis may be needed.
Throughout this process, we want you to feel supported and empowered. Our goal is to provide clarity regarding your symptoms and help you develop strategies that improve your quality of life. If you have any questions or concerns at any stage, please don't hesitate to ask.

Referral:
We prefer a referral from your General Practitioner (GP) to one of our psychiatrists.Triage Form & Review:
After your referral, you will need to complete a Triage Form that includes Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS). Our team will review your referral and determine if our services can meet your needs. If your referral is accepted, we will send you an ADHD-Intake Form to be completed and returned to us.

Primary and high school reports, if available, will help us confirm the presence of ADHD symptoms during childhood.First Appointment:
The first appointment will be a 30-minute session for Qb Check, which measures attention, impulse control, and motor activity (hyperactivity/fidgetiness).Psychiatrist Review:
After gathering all relevant information, your psychiatrist will review all the data provided.
Step 4: Part 2 - ADHD Clinical Assessment (Clinical interview, Feedback, Diagnosis & Treatment Initiation)
Second Appointment for Clinical Evaluation:
You will meet with the psychiatrist for a 90-minute session. This appointment will include:A comprehensive psychiatric evaluation to assess other mental health conditions
A structured interview for ADHD
Feedback & Diagnosis:
During this appointment, the psychiatrist will discuss the findings of the evaluation with you.Starting Treatment:
If an ADHD diagnosis is confirmed, we will work together to create a personalized treatment plan. This may include behavioural strategies, therapy, and/or medication.
If medication is considered, we will apply for a Special Authority for stimulant medication (if needed).
If you choose to remain under the care of Auckland Psychiatrist, treatment can begin on the same day as the clinical evaluation, with regular follow-up appointments to monitor your progress.
Alternatively, if you prefer to transfer your care back to your GP, they can start treatment and provide follow-up care.
We look forward to supporting you throughout this assessment process. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.
ADHD Treatment for Adults in New Zealand
When it comes to ADHD treatment in NZ, it is crucial that therapy and coaching are used in addition to medication if it is needed. With guided therapy, most people can learn to control their ADHD symptoms before they get out of hand and cause problems in their life. A combination of medication and behaviour therapy may be prescribed. For a problem like ADHD, it is also important to assess if other issues are complicating or exacerbating the ADHD symptoms – this is known as comorbid conditions.
ADHD MEDICATIONS
Any ADHD medication is tailored to your exact requirements. Other treatment methods for ADHD include cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), psycho-education, family and couple therapy. ADHD medication can help someone who has ADHD to concentrate better, be less impulsive, feel calmer and learn and practise new skills. ADHD medication that is available in New Zealand includes methylphenidate, dexamphetamine, and atomoxetine.
Undiagnosed and untreated, ADHD can have a detrimental effect on both physical and mental health, career and financial difficulties and relationship problems. Some self-help techniques such as exercising vigorously and regularly, sleeping well and creating an organised environment can be helpful. However, if you are unable to manage the symptoms of ADHD, it may be time to seek professional help.
If you feel that you or a loved one may suffer from ADHD, please contact Auckland Psychiatrist on 0212416007. Our friendly and professional staff will diagnose the problem if it is present and will help you with appropriate ADHD treatment to gain control over your life.
