ADHD Evaluation

Thank you for choosing us for your Adult ADHD assessment. We understand that learning about ADHD can be both helpful and difficult.

At Auckland Psychiatrist, we provide a thorough and supportive evaluation of ADHD.

We use online tools to make scheduling easy, creating a smoother experience for our clients.

Assessing adults with undiagnosed ADHD involves a detailed clinical evaluation, psychometric tests, daily life impact assessment and input from other sources.

Our goal is to accurately diagnose ADHD, rule it out if not present, and plan follow-ups if treatment is needed. Some may quickly show clear signs of ADHD, while others may require more investigation or a different diagnosis.

We want you to feel supported throughout this process. Our aim is to clarify your symptoms and help you find ways to improve your quality of life. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

ADHD | Referral Pathway

Referral: We prefer referrals from your General Practitioner (GP) to our psychiatrists.

Triage Form & Review: After your referral, complete a Triage Form that includes the Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS). Our team will review this to see if we can meet your needs. If not, we will refer you back to your GP.

Initial Contact: If your referral is accepted, you will receive an ADHD-Intake Form to fill out and return.

Pre-Assessment

ADHD-Intake Form: Your responses help us determine if we can provide the care you need. We will notify you or your GP if your needs are beyond our services.

Appointment Booking: If we can provide care, we will schedule your first appointment after payment, starting your ADHD evaluation.

ADHD Evaluation | Two Steps

Step 1: Pre-Clinical Assessment

Self-Rated and External Assessments: You will receive ADHD rating scales to fill out, along with a questionnaire for parents or close friends. Please complete these and return them before your appointment.

Supporting Documents: If possible, provide primary and high school reports to help confirm ADHD symptoms from childhood.

QbCheck: The first appointment lasts 30 minutes and includes the Qb Check, which measures attention, impulse control, and activity levels (hyperactivity/fidgeting).

Psychiatrist Review: Your psychiatrist will review all collected information.

Step 2: Clinical Assessment

Psychiatric assessment: You will meet with the psychiatrist for a 90-minute session, which includes:

  • A thorough psychiatric evaluation for other mental health issues.

  • A structured ADHD interview.

Feedback & Diagnosis: The psychiatrist will share the evaluation results with you.

Starting Treatment: If diagnosed with ADHD, we will design a personalised treatment plan together, incorporating strategies, therapy, and/or medication. If medication is considered, we may request Special Authority for stimulants if needed. Treatment can begin on the same day of evaluation, with regular follow-ups to monitor your progress. If you choose to see your GP for care, we can suggest treatment plans for that as well.

We look forward to supporting you throughout this assessment process. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.

ADHD Treatment for Adults in New Zealand

When it comes to ADHD treatment in NZ, it is crucial that therapy and coaching are used in addition to medication if it is needed. With guided therapy, most people can learn to control their ADHD symptoms before they get out of hand and cause problems in their life. A combination of medication and behaviour therapy may be prescribed. For a problem like ADHD, it is also important to assess if other issues are complicating or exacerbating the ADHD symptoms – this is known as comorbid conditions.

ADHD MEDICATIONS

Any ADHD medication is tailored to your exact requirements. Other treatment methods for ADHD include cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), psycho-education, family and couple therapy. ADHD medication can help someone who has ADHD to concentrate better, be less impulsive, feel calmer and learn and practise new skills. ADHD medication that is available in New Zealand includes methylphenidate, dexamphetamine, and atomoxetine.

Undiagnosed and untreated, ADHD can have a detrimental effect on both physical and mental health, career and financial difficulties and relationship problems. Some self-help techniques such as exercising vigorously and regularly, sleeping well and creating an organised environment can be helpful. However, if you are unable to manage the symptoms of ADHD, it may be time to seek professional help.

If you feel that you or a loved one may suffer from ADHD, please contact Auckland Psychiatrist on 0212416007. Our friendly and professional staff will diagnose the problem if it is present and will help you with appropriate ADHD treatment to gain control over your life.
